💌A Note From Me

There’s a part of corporate life people don’t talk about enough.

Not everyone is collaborative. Not everyone communicates clearly. And not everyone wants to see you win.

I used to think strong relationships, a good work ethic, and being visible was enough.

Reality check: It’s not.

At some point, you realize it’s not just about performance. It’s about navigating people. Personalities, egos, and politics.

If you don’t learn that, it will slow you down.

So I had to learn to move differently. More strategic, less reactive, more aware.

Because the goal isn’t to win every moment. It’s to keep moving forward.

3 Ways to Handle Headwinds at Work

Gif by Jasmine-Star on Giphy

01. Take the Sun Tzu approach.
Not every battle is meant to be fought out loud. Step back and observe how people move before you respond. Who do they align with? When do they push back? What actually motivates them? The more you understand the person, the less personal it feels and the more strategic your response becomes. This isn’t about being passive, it’s about being intentional.

02. Keep your emotions in control.
You don’t win by reacting emotionally and you don’t win by staying silent either. Stay calm, stay clear, and keep things moving forward, but also make sure the right people see your work. Keep stakeholders informed, follow up in writing, and don’t assume your impact speaks for itself. You’re not being extra, you’re protecting your reputation while staying in control of the situation.

03. Use the ‘flanker’ strategy.
Not every situation needs direct confrontation. Sometimes the smartest move is to shift your approach completely. Build relationships with other stakeholders, create visibility in different rooms, and expand your influence so one person doesn’t have control over your growth. While someone is focused on blocking you in one lane, you’re already creating opportunities in another.

Your Assignment Until Next Time

This week, pause before you react.

Think about one situation or person that’s been frustrating you and ask yourself what’s actually driving their behavior. Then decide how you want to respond in a way that keeps you in control.

Move with intention, not emotion.
